Andrew Murphy, RP (Qualifying)

What's on your mind?

Hi, I’m Andrew, a psychodynamically oriented psychotherapist working in Toronto, Canada. If any of the below resonates with you, please fill out my contact form.

what are your needs?

You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, starting tasks or getting things done, feeling dissociated or detached, anxious about relationships, chronically irritable. You may have just been diagnosed with BPD, be wrestling with memories of childhood, with a chronic sense of guilt or shame. Or maybe you are struggling with desire, with uncomfortable sexual urges or thoughts.

In any of these cases, you might be looking for someone to sit with you, to help untangle some of the knotted threads of your experience.

My Approach

My therapeutic approach is informed by both my training in psychodynamic therapy and my own experiences with therapy as an adolescent and adult. My belief is that we all have unconscious scenes that we return to throughout our life. Rather than erase these, my goal is to help you find ways to open up, explore, and add colour these scenes, to come into dialogue with yourself.

Concretely, sessions can look very different from person to person. We may start off with an image that comes to your mind and follow the associations as we go on. We might talk about the feelings that are arising in therapy and whether they reflect other situations in your life. Or, we may talk about an event you can’t quite understand: why you acted a certain way, or said something particular to a friend.

My door is open to individuals of all backgrounds and identities. To be more explicit, this includes (and is not limited to) queer, trans, and/or neurodivergent individuals, persons with disabilities, people practising kink/BDSM, individuals involved in sex work, and religious individuals.

Unfortunately, as of now I am unequipped to work with children and younger adolescents (13-15).

My Professional Background

My undergraduate degree was in English literature, with a focus on Canadian poetry and Medieval literature. While literature is an enduring love of mine, I wanted to do something that involved engagement with others. This led me to working in libraries and completing a master’s degree in Library and Archival studies at the University of Toronto.

Through a series of unexpected events, I’ve worked the last six years in IT at a small organization.

In 2022 I started the 3-year program at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis, completing my degree in August 2025. Through this experience I had the privilege of working with a number of individuals and completing over 450 hours of clinical experience through the low-cost clinic administrated by the school.
